Berlin Marathon 2017 – Know Everything !

One of the most attractive marathons around the world started over half a century ago. The Berlin Marathon is not only one of the largest, but it is also one of the most famous across the world. Participants come from over 107 countries, there are tens of thousands of racers, and officiants tout more than a million spectators. Racing through Brandenburg Gate and Victory Column, the BMW Berlin Marathon is one of the Big-5 marathons that completes the World marathon Major series.

Gathering people from around the world, this event is one of the most loved races due to its flat, looping course, tepid weather and enthusiastic onlookers. More than seven world records have been broken along this infamous loop, which is what makes it that much more excitement-filled. More than just a marathon, the whole city comes alive with more than 70 bands and a festival that pulls everyone together even from the neighboring countries just for a glimpse of the action.

The major highlight of the festival is when runners make their way around Brandenburg Gate directly past the grandstand on their last 400 meters as the crowd cheers them on. Although an excellent course for beginner through advanced, the BMW Berlin Marathon’s flat nature makes it ideal for those looking to get their feet running. Being a world marathon major, that it is, the BMW Berlin Marathon shows how running brings people together, with a route that takes you on a historic tour of Berlin, with an outstanding finish at the 18th-century Brandenburg Gate. Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele took the winning spot for the men with a time of 2.03.03 and the ladies winning spot went to yet another Ethiopian Aberu Kebede with a time of 2.20.45.

Aid Stations

Toilet cabins will be available in sufficient number at the end of every refreshment station, as well as in the start and finish area.

As a runner, you will see some of Berlin’s’ most popular sights: Siegessäule, Bundeskanzleramt, Reichstag, Fernsehturm, Rheinbabenallee, Rathaus Schöneberg, Tauentzienstr, Philharmonie, Konzerthaus, Staatsoper, Berliner Dom and Brandenburger Tor.


On departing Brandenburg Gate, you have to route Charlottenburg, around Tiergarten, along Moabit and Mitte, then south to Friedrichshain. After that, it winds west between Kreuzberg and Neukölln, through Schöneberg, then over to Steglitz and Zehlendorf, before turning north back toward the city’s center. Looping above Schöneberg, the course comes in a full circle as it finishes through the Gate.

The BMW Berlin Marathon follows a looped course that takes in 10 Berlin neighborhoods, and starts and finishes on Straße des 17 Juni, close to the Brandenburg Gate. What you see next is a 26.2 miles of fascinating landmarks, including the State Opera House, Berlin Cathedral, Siegessäule column, and Potsdamer Platz. The course itself is notoriously flat and quick, with plenty of world records having been set and broken there throughout the years. Along this axis, there are refreshments everywhere, aid stations which gives water, sports drinks, among others to the runners.

Around 8,000 additional inline skaters compete at the marathon course the Saturday before the running event. Power walkers, hand bikers, wheelchair riders, and a children’s marathon are all part of the marathon weekend, which is organized by SCC EVENTS and currently sponsored by BMW. The course within the metropolis starts and finishes near the Brandenburg Gate. Because of the division of city, even though the marathon events before 1990 were limited to the area of West Berlin.

Only on 30 September 1990, were athletes able to run through the Brandenburg Gate through the unified city saw its first race running through both halves. The 2017 edition of the Berlin Marathon will commence September 24th and the lottery will open from 10/19 -11/2. 


As well as the main racing event, there are also events for inline skaters, power walkers, hand-cyclists, wheelchair riders and a special children’s marathon on the same weekend. Due to the popularity of the Berlin marathon, you must enter a ballot system to gain entry to the event. Applications are open during the last two weeks of October of the previous year of the event.
